I have been playing for more than 50 years (since I was very young:) I began on the piano and later became passionate about the Hammond B3 organ!!!
What was the first concert you ever went to?
My mother took me to Shreveport, Louisiana to see Otis Redding in 1965(?)....I HAD to have a B3 after that. I was crazy about rhythm & blues!!!!
What gear do you use?
I have a Yamaha C3 Grand and a Porta B (actually an A100 built into a "case").
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
So many....loved Ray Charles, Oscar Peterson, Jimmy Smith, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Jimmy Reed, Marvin Gaye....was very influenced by the blues & jazz....jazz rooted in the blues...loved Louis Armstrong, Billie Hollday....Bud Powell, etc,etc....
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
Today, I free-lance and play in different formations and very often solo. I am not in a band per se. I spent most of my life "in bands" though, working 5 and 6 nights a week in the States. I worked with Dino Vera (drummer) for nearly 26 years and we had different bands. When I was 18 years old, I moved to New Orleans to work with a group called the Milestones, then did a stit with Eternity's Children (playing B3) and that is where I met Dino.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Well, I like playing with Gary Brooker & his friends and because of him I had the pleasure to play with Eric Clapton. I love playing music with my brother, Donny Blair!!! I appreciate all the musicians who I've had the opportunity to play with..past & present. Alvin Queen is a friend ( great drummer) who always encourages me.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
Don't remember...probably a Pop festival back in the late 60's. Smallest? Maybe a small nightclub or a concert in a Church??
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Hard pressed to think of just one. Maybe I'd just prefer SILENCE and see what kind of music would come out of that:)
