Salt On Your Skin [Master Edit] - An original about love and the beach. Written for two friends in France and inspired by Galveston.

I Live In A Blue House - I sat on the front porch of the blue house where my daughter worked her heart and soul magic after daddy had nowhere else to go when his wife found another at work. She got $600 from her new guy to expedite my getting out of town. I missed my sons. The same thing happened when I lost out on seeing my perfect for me daughter grow from day today. I never recovered from it. This song was written to thank my Mandy. While singing for my supper for 10 years in Galveston, it was my most requested song by far. I had weekly gigs at restaurant/bars and my friends came back to hear me and keep me company. The parents and kids sang "Blue House" with me and I sang it 2 to 4 times nightly. I was supposed to play 6 - 10 pm but when the weather permitted it was 12 - 1 when I stopped. Galveston is my adopted hometown.

Start Livin' Today - The 1st video I did for "Start Livin' Today" was beach focused but I missed the mark. I was motivated to try and capture what we all felt. Disasters, both natural and man-made come with a suddenness that allows no escape. Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Titanic, 1900 Storm, Katrina, Pearl Harbor, earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, volcanos, plane crashes, mass murders, and so many other catastrophic events. The George Floyd murder was captured on video and the outrage swept across the world. Systematic racism undeniably exists. The visual shock of seeing, over and over, a hand-cuffed man of color laying down with a man's knee pressed into his throat. A man who swore to serve and protect. George Floyd begged for his life and repeatedly said he couldn't breathe. The survivors of the Parkland massacre started a movement toward gun control. Still so little has been done. 9/11 tore at the heart of America. My best friend told me after the 1st plane crashed into the tower and watched the 2nd plane hit. The heroism that day as police, firemen, and those caught in the inferno did all they could. I wrote this that night depicting the way death gives no warning and can end lives with no rhyme or reason. Start living now. Cherish your loved ones and never hesitate to say "I love you." We need to be kind to one another. False profits try and turn us against each other. Resist.

Do It All Again - Written after I drove a lady home after sunrise. She came to the bar where I worked a week before Christmas. She stood back from the bar and kept smiling at me. She looked like Lynda Carter's younger sister. The bartender working the back side of the round bar came to me and said "There's a real pretty lady wants to talk to you." I knew who it is. She said," You don't know me and you'll probably think I'm weird (No, she was so pretty that it was all I could do not just stare and grin). "Will you go to my Christmas Party with me Saturday?" My answer was a sad one but I couldn't pass up the chance of spending an evening with her. I said, "I have to work but....You were kind Enough to ask me, so would you be my date to our Christmas Party?" She said,"Yes!". (I breathed a sigh of relief as she wrote down her address and number). I was on cloud nine. Two of my security guard friends were a little upset with me because the three of us had planned to go stag but come on now. This was 1976 and the date was perfect. The song lyric tells the story. At the party she was the main attraction. I felt ten feet tall and bullet proof. A Yuletide story sung over a simple guitar riff. Truly, Debbie Thibodeaux, this one's for you. All the ladies in the video are Native Americans. I dreamed about my wife before I met her on this earth. She was riding a white stallion bareback clad in a smile. Long chestnut hair blowing in the breeze. A truly amazing dream.

Marine Sulphur Queen - An historically accurate original about the disappearance of a T-2 tanker with a load of sulphur in route from Beaumont, TX to Norfolk, VA. Many claim it was swallowed up by the Bermuda Triangle. The Marine Sulphur Queen had a history of fires and debris was found west of the tip of Florida. Cuban fishermen reported an unusual smell. I remember the news bulletin when the Marine Sulphur Queen was reported missing in my mid-teens. After I completed my research and the song was written and recorded, I contacted the owner of the best site online about the Marine Sulphur Queen. She was the daughter of one of the crewmen who perished on the ship. I emailed her a copy. I wanted her approval before posting the video. She approved and we made plans for her to come to Galveston and pick up her CD. She lived in New Orleans. She passed away a short time after we talked. A friend of hers contacted me and told me she had died.

Mandy With The Laughing Eyes - I took my angel's bedtime routine and wrote her a song. My daughter is amazing. I am so proud of her. When she couldn't sleep when she was very young, I would go to her room and put my hand up in her bed so she could hold my thumb and she was able to go to sleep. Me too - On the floor. She's grown into a beautiful, intelligent woman and she is happily married and living in Hawaii with her wonderful son, Trevor (My grandson). I think her husband is kewl! Love the 3 of them to the max! Recorded LIVE in the bathroom for the natural reverb effect like when I was 16. :)

If You Could See You Through My Eyes - Written for the lady I love 6 years before we met eye to eye. In my eyes she is never less than breathtakingly beautiful. The idea came from a conversation with a friend whose boyfriend skipped out after cleaning out their bank account. She was down on herself. I said "If you could see you through my eyes?". She was a beautiful woman of 24. I wrote the line down on the back of a business card. My best friend's girlfriend loved the sang when I played it for them right after I wrote it. Kind of thought it was a good one. : )

Devil And The Deep Blue Sea - A syncopated original inspired by watching Jaws for the umpteenth time. The Manta Stingray has been called a devil. I caught a Ray whose body was over half my size without the wings. It's eyes were blood-red around the pupils. My young daughter was standing right behind me and watched as I drew a crowd. I fought the ray up on the top step of the seawall in Corpus Christi and asked the people if I had caught it. they said yes. Caught it with a lure. I hear this sweet voice from behind me and my daughter had gone back to a Cyclone fence 30-35 feet away. She said, "Daddy, when that thing is back in the water you can have your daughter back". I took my fillet knife and cut the line. With the next wave, it was gone. I know I should have removed the hooks but it's barbed tail was flying back and forth and I wanted no part of it. I had caught several small sharks surf fishing and was able to remove the hook. The ray took my favorite Mirror-Lure. Had it been a Great White or a Killer Whale, I would have observed from a safe distance like at home in an Eazy Chair watching Jaws.

Sand Dollars - Written sitting on top of Diamond Head in Hawaii in 1984 after reading a postcard about the Legend of the Sand Dollar. I decided to go back down the outside of the crater instead of taking the winding path down. Dumb idea. I had my back pack on and guitar in one hand. LOL. Ruined my jeans and boots sliding and grabbing bushes as I sled 15 - 20 feet at a time. Made it half way down and worked my over to the path. Lucky to be alive. So was my guitar. I have 8 surgical procedures that need to be done.  I have to submit a letter from a dentist to 6 surgeons saying I am free of abscesses.  Both pole teeth for my partial plate are broken off below the gumline and abcessed. Beach Thunder - Written on the Seawall in Galveston when a line of thunderstorms drove me into my car till they passed. There were no Heinekens quenching my thirst that day at 1pm. Just a creative license mentioning my favorite beer. Synthesizer is not usually a musical instrument I utilize. This original was fun to record. Galveston Rocks! My favorite Heineken story involves "The look" the bartender/friend would give me to see if I needed a beer. I would play 4 to 6 hours and rarely took a break. My friends were in awe of my bladder control. The only breaks I took were emergency bathroom breaks. 1st one 2-3 hours into the gig. Mark would bring me 6-8 Heinies a night from which I would get one or two big sips from each bottle. I sang in the hottest part of the open-air Palapa bar where no breeze dared to blow. I wore a tank top and shorts and sweated profusely 10 months of the year and froze my ____ January and February. Mark and I worked out a way to get through the last hour. He would bring me a shot of peppermint snapse and my voice would return as though by alcohol miracle. I loved singing on Galveston Island. Be it a restaurant/bar, wedding reception/wedding, or private party. I played a retirement dinner for several judges for an outrageous fee. People actually paid me to do what I would have done for free. Nobody tell on me, please. Admittedl3, at 72 with loss of feeling in both hands, there is not much of a demand. :) ALL TRADEMARKS AND COPYRIGHTS REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THEIR OWNERS. The Storm - When I read about the 1900 Storm being the worst natural disaster in us history, I began to research the hurricane's deadly path across Cuba, it's left turn across the Gulf of Mexico with Galveston, Texas in its sights, and the devastation (The US weather forecaster's predicted it striking Florida. Only thr Cuban forecaster's got it right and they were ignored by the USA). A photographer for Edison had his newly invented camera and took pictures of the island after the storm (Between 6 and 12 thousand dead). The story of the orphanage and the fate of the nuns and orphans was heart-breaking. To ensure that they would all stay together, the nuns, each tied up to a dozen orphans to them with catastrophic results. The surge of the Gulf drowned them all. When one body was found by searchers there was the gruesome task of following the rope. All rights to the pictures are maintained by the Rosenberg Library for the citizenry of Galveston. The song was written in late summer 2000 in tribute to those who perished. September 8. 2000 was the 100th anniversary of the deadly storm. There was no Seawall then. I fractured a bone in my right hand and could not play my song, two months in the making. I found the original recording with wave sound effects [along with the wind] after 20 years and wanted to post it for my friends. Please listen and hear about the disaster that very nearly wiped Galveston off the face of the earth. It didn't because of the true grit of the Coastal Texans who rebuild after each time "The Gulf" rises up.

I Still Love You - I was playing my wooden lady and singing at a piano bar called "Thlrsties" just off Phelan Boulevard in Beaumont, Texas. This happened 39 years ago. l had written a new song and this was the 1st night I would sing it. I was in town to see my daughter and mom. As I sang I noticed a man wearing a cowboy hat sitting quietly alone at his table. When I finished, he arose and walked up to me and said, "Could you Plat song again?".e ten placed a $20 bill on my music stand. I played it for him. He tapped his hat and as he headed by me toward the door, he turned and said, "You nailed it, my friend." I found this recording on a 39-year-old cassette and it had hiss, pops, volume drops, and distortion. I worked on the edit for two weeks then paired it with the slideshow I had made for an acoustic version of the song.

Put an end to the madness - We are the same, you and me Round up all the monsters who leave black men hanging from a tree. Bridge: We have to fight the devil or we will find there's hell to pay He needs to be led away in shackles and locked away. Locked away. Prosecute the demon politicians who get wealthy from bribery. We the people need to protect our freedoms. Nothing about freedom is really free Together our voices will be heard. They try to steal our votes and betray democracy The anti-Christ surrounded by evil souls. A Fascist in the house of white is not how it should be. Bridge: We have to fight the devil or we will find there's hell to pay He needs to be led away in shackles and locked away. Locked away. No more stealing from poor countries. Everything of value. Such insanity. No slavery. No people going hungry. No killing for religion or erasing a society. Stop raping the planet in the name of progress. Global warming by degree Men and women respected - Equal pay - The way it should be. Bridge: We have to fight the devil or we will find there's hell to pay He needs to be led away in shackles and locked away. Locked away. Make this our day of reckoning. Embrace our humanity. We’ll get back to the Garden of Eden and see to shining sea. The flames of freedom should burn for everyone. Quit thinking selfishly We’ve got a chance to make things right. Copyright 2020 JD Richards BMI The vocal was recorded LIVE with my webcam microphone. I'll need to re-record it with my stage mic and windscreen later. I couldn't wait to post it. Posted the lyric, as well.

God Help Us All - The ominous bell conjures up thoughts of the grip the pandemic has on the world. Especially in the United States where it was politicized and poorly handled. In 1990 I started writing this for a CD project. My words can easily be applied to today. It is inspired by the Beatles [John mainly]. I found this demo on a cassette. I cleaned it up as best I could. I hope you enjoy it. The day after I recorded it I lost feeling in my left hand for 8 years. God Help Us All - JD Richards There are no easy answers to the questions in my heart No, life’s not easy. At best it’s bitter-sweet Chorus: Standin’ on a ledge lookin’ out at forever Ready to jump but afraid to take the fall I know I’d better pray for my salvation God help us all There’s no one to show you through the valley of the shadow It’s a hard road to travel when you walk alone Chorus: Standin’ on a ledge lookin’ out at forever Ready to jump but afraid to take the fall I know I’d better pray for my salvation God help us all Instrumental Break: Where’s this place called heaven and how do I get in ( I know ) There’s no place I can hide the things I’ve done Chorus: Standin’ on a ledge lookin’ out at forever Ready to jump but afraid to take the fall I know I’d better pray for my salvation God help us all Tag: God help us all God help us all © 1998 Wathesgro Music BMI

Hold Me - I thought I had lost this song to time. I searched my email and found an mp3 from 2012. I have Hold Me sounding like 1980 when I wrote it during the Overstreet Sister's recording session The producer came out in the lounge area and told me they would have time to record 1 more at the end of the 3 hour session Did I think I could write a love ballad I grinned and said, "Yes, I can." 30 minutes later they started working on it. As I wrote it I heard Crystal Gayle's voice. The arrangement and piano magic by Rick Durrett. Dedicated to my wife.

Tale Of Myrtles Cove - I named one of the hard drives on my computer "Myrtle's Cove". Don't really know where the name came from. I did a search and found nothing. I let my imagination run wild and the result was this tale of a double murder and burial near Myrtle's Cove, a fictitious place in the Florida Panhandle.

Hawaiian Holiday - Over 35 years ago I carried my guitar to the top of Diamondhead in Hawaii to serena... read morede the wind. I took pictures of Honolulu that looked like postcards. Rather than take the long and winding trail down the inside of the crater, I made the decision to go down the outside, not realizing there would be drops of 10-20 feet with nothing to grab. I grabbed my guitar in my right hand and started down. I burned both back pockets off my jeans. Lucky I put my wallet in my front pocket. I was slip/sliding away for about a hundred feet and I decided back my way over and take that long and winding trail down. 35 years later my daughter and grandson took pictures standing where I stood. They took the trail down.

In A Heartbeat - This recording is by my band,. "Beach Thunder". All instruments and vocals by me/jd with a programmable Alessis drum machine. It is inspired by the early Beatles, ZZ Top, and Chuck Berry. I did the lead guitar in one take. Didn't think I could do it any better. Billy Gibbons I'm not. The song was written with this presentation in mind. The previous posting was corrupt. My apology.

I Still Believe In Love - When the object of your affection doesn't know how much you care. Maybe you should let them know? Then there are times when love has come and gone and the only solace is the proverbial looking back. That's when dreaming is better than reality.

My Heart Knows No Peace - The malevolent specter of alcoholism is represented by the hooded figure in the first frame of my slideshow video. The figure has no race. It has no gender. Alcoholism is an equal opportunity addiction. The isolation seems to be a long term deadly dance. This original addresses the effect both have on women and men, young and old. It is my observation that drinking alone at home or drinking in a crowd have similar results. Group drinking makes it easier to self medicate.

The Gulf Is Crying - On April 20, 2010 the "Deep Horizon" oil spill disaster began devastating the Gulf Of Mexico. The Louisiana/Mississippi Gulf Coast was changed for decades to come, if not forever. The Gulf is indeed still crying. The lives of those who earned their livelihood from the Gulf were changed overnight. BP did not include the spillage in their year-end report and patted themselves on the back for a profitable year. They cut corners for more profit and it cost so many.

Little Goddess - I went to an AOL get together with my friend, Mike, and I was introduced to a young lady who captivated me from word one. My buddy was sweet on her so I had to be strictly hands-off. We slow danced a few times and she gave me her number and I called her several times then had to just walk away. The attraction was mutual. I wrote this for Christi a few years later after moving to Nashville to write songs for my supper. Five feet tall and weighed 95 pounds. Now that is a little goddess.

Next Time - You always tell yourself, next time I'll play it smart. I won't make the same mistakes. A lot of us marry the same guy or gal with a different face. A certain type appeals to you. It's a common thing. The quickest way to heal a broken heart is to find love again. I chose pictures of Sean Connery for my video. He is my favorite actor. He was the original Bond then he had a fantastic career thereafter. Masterful performance after masterful performance. Now in his late eighties and retired to his island.

Last Cowboy In Town - Written when I was writing for Tuneupon Music in Nashville in 1980. This is the demo I did immediately after finishing the song. I added the full step higher modulation before the last verse later and performed my song several thousand times from 1999 to 2008. There or 1 or 2 lines that I go slightly off pitch. Had a recording with the modulation that was swept out to West Bay in Galveston when Hurricane Ike destroyed my friends, Chaplin Dave and Michelle's beach house and storage unit. They lost everything and I lost thousands of pictures, over 1,000 song demos, two boxes of song contracts, dishes, and keepsakes.

Goodbye My Lady - This was my first song that got demoed in Nashville. I wrote it in C# but the guy who produced the track did it in A because that was a good key for the pickers. I couldn't sing the vocal it was too highway when I tried to sing the melody. The tracks were recorded in 1980. I got a vocal step stool and re-did the melody in 1999 and sang this vocal.

You Found Me Just In Time - The music track was an alternative for "I'm So Lonely". I played it a few times and just started singing whatever popped in my head. Some of it worked. I finished the lyric and started recording the lead vocal then worked on the Beatlesque backgrounds. it was a fun song to build a new vocal structure to. The bands I fronted out of Beaumont, Texas in the late 1960s did a lot of Beatles, Animals, Elvis, Hendrix, and Yardbirds. That gives away my age. : ) I choose break-up pictures for the video until the very last frame.

This Is No Virgin Heart - This is the first single off my NEW CD, "72". Fitting since I'm 72. All instrumentation by Doug Burtchaell. When your heart's been broken a time, or two, and you look around the room and there's never anyone but you. It makes you jaded. The negative clouds your view. Love can leave you alone in the dark when all they left you was a broken heart.

That's My Baby - This song was inspired by ex-wife #2 right after we got married. We were in Destin,FLA and she was walking at the edge of the surf wearing blue jeans, a pleasent (word choice deliberate) blouse, and a straw hat. All the instrumentation and the arrangement are by Doug Burtchaell of Houston, TX. I wrote it and all the vocals are by me. Now, to my choice of words and the dedication. The pictures all include my baby girl whose all grown up, married, and living I Hawaii and my super duper grandson lives there too. It's a rough job but someone had to live there in Pradise. I'm glad it's Mandy and the Jackson family plus Mr Tee Benson. I wrote "I Live In A Blue House" to think her in song for having to rejuvenate my heart and soul when I arrived in Galveston. Every time I hear me sing "That's My Baby", know that I'm thinking about my perfect for me daughter and going fishing with her and watching her face light up when she caught another big one.

I included the Lubbock and Texas Tech lines for 2 Texas Tech fans who came to hear me sing every week in Galveston. My favorite lady movie stars are Charlize Theron and Halle Berry. I needed a redhead for the 1st frame of Ruby's Dream video. I was extremely happy to find a picture of Charlize Theron as a redhead. I used all pictures of the incredibly talented beauty.

Down In Miami - The original title was Down In Havana. Doug Burtchaell of Houston, Texas did the arrangement and played all the instruments. I watched in awe as the song took shape. Do yourself a favor and listen to all of Doug's guitar mastery. Most of the lead was created on the fly. I told him I wanted a 2 minute conga at the end so he switched to conga mode and wow did he deliver. What he did in his home studio rivals the best work of Carlos Santana. Thank you Doug.

Watchin' Heather Dance - I wrote this immediately after watching the video of Duran Duran's "Hungry Like A Wolf". I didn't copy anything directly but wanted to create something with that type power. This is probably the best rhythm guitar I ever played LIVE. No punch ins. Who would think that this was written by a 57 year old acoustic guitarist/vocalist who believes till this very day that the most honest genre of music is someone with a guitar, or piano, alone facing an audience. I walked away from independent recording deals and chose, what for me, was the ultimate musical path. The feedback and instant gratification of singing to new and old friends can not be matched. I owe my peace of mind and heart in regards to my music to places like the Captain's Table, the Baja Beach Club (My first Galveston weekly gig in January 1999, the Jamaica Beach Saturday Gigs, Bahama Mama's, Daddy's in Gilchrist, and so many others (Over 3000 gigs in 9 1/2 years - Yes, I was quite busy. During season I would book two gigs a day several days a week. At the 'Table I saw my friends kids grow from early elementary school to junior high.)
