J.D. Richards - Songwriter - She Said Yes [Master Edit] - I felt like I was about to get married again after promising myself I wouldn't and I wouldn't leave Galveston. I should have listened to that little voice in my head. I wrote this as I prepared to ask her to marry me. She asked me. I thought she loved me but it was a case of wanting me to help her keep her kids. Stupid heart, I had. Didn't look before I took a big leap. My body failed me as I was ready to leave in 2011. It was my fault I left the island. The lure of a pretty face concealed a drug addict's twist and turns in life and a portfolio of mental ills. I told her of my plans to move into a retirement home in November 2018. My daughter wanted me to come to Hawaii and live with her family in March 2019. Three doctors advised me not to take the long flight. I had a 2nd four discs fusion surgery on 07/01/2019. I still believe in love and the magic it can bring to life. Nothing can cure a broken heart but love. The cause and the cure. Beginning from the ashes of the end completes the circle of humanity.

Epitaph (Last Goodbye) - Written a week ago and my wild and crazy neck problems flared up big time, so it was impossible to play my guitar longer than 15 - 20 seconds without numbness in both hands. I played the intro and sang the melody sans guitar. No rehearsal time was available, so I gave it my try. My head is at an odd angle because I over-did it on my rehab this morning. I'll be fine tomorrow. I took my neck brave off and sang it. I sang the way I felt it. All things considered, I'm satisfied, for tonight. This is the 2nd song I've done without my wooden lady. The other was Amazing Grace for my mom in 1989. The inspiration came from my friend, "One-Eyed Jack" and from the passing of David Olney on stage in the middle of one of his songs at a festival in Florida. He was a master songwriter and his story songs are legendary. Guy Clark and David Olney were major influences, along with Gordon Lightfoot, Dylan, Willie, The Beatles, Joe Cocker, Joni Mitchell, Jimmie Buffett, Leonard Cohen, and Bob McDill.

War Is Hell - I donated the use of War Is Hell to Operation Helmet to include on a CD sent to the US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and sold to raise money to supply helmet kits to front-line US troops. I play Taps at the end of the song. The song was inspired by tales of my father working in the rice fields around Nome and China, Texas in his early teens and lying about his age to join the Marines at 15. He served in the Pacific in WW2 on Guadalcanal and other islands. He told me when I said I was volunteering for the Marine Corp when I was going to be drafted that the US couldn't win in Vietnam. You can't allow your enemy a safety zone to retreat to where you can not pursue. I didn't pass the physical because of my blown-out right knee. Semper Fi.

Breathe 2AM {Cover} - I love this song. Very Dylanesque in some of the lyrics. I recorded it several months ago and the verses sounded somewhat Willie Nelson inspired. I tried to cut loose and accent some high notes this time. There were a few lines I seemed unsure and will work on. I thought of rewriting a few lines but Anna Nalick's song was written for her and brilliantly done.

Semper Fi {Master} - I wrote this after talking to 2 friends who served in Vietnam and came home to the political turmoil that has become these United States One was a "Snake-eater" who went behind enemy lines after officers. He came back a changed man and was stabbed to death by six outside a bar. Ge was unarmed but did considerable damage to his assailants. My other friend was a sniper. He was a guitar picker before the war and came home with nerve damage in his right hand and forearm. Those who are serving our country and have served deserve the best medical care that those that are elected to represent us get. They deserve much more than a thank you. I volunteered for the USMC and failed the physical because of a damaged right knee. My draft number was in the middle. My father, a decorated WW2 USMC veteran who served on Guadalcanal, told me it was a war we couldn't win because of the guerilla tactics of the enemy. Both Semper Fi and War Is Hell were written in 1980 before Iraq or Afghanistan. The video feed is not LIVE footage out of respect and reflects Vietnam and Iraq. Semper Fi

Standing At The Gates of Hell (LIVE) - I posted a video stream with this new original of some beautiful ladies. I had the LIVE recording in the recycle bin because I sneezed right at the beginning of the 2nd verse. I received 3 messages yesterday asking me to post the LIVE video because they wanted to see me sing my song. I retrieved the video and edited out the loud sneeze and 5 seconds of silence before starting the verse. My right hand is not guitar-worthy tonight, so here is me performing "Standing At The Gates Of Hell.

Marine Sulphur Queen - An historically accurate original about the disappearance of a T-2 tanker with a load of sulphur in route from Beaumont, TX to Norfolk, VA. Many claim it was swallowed up by the Bermuda Triangle. The Marine Sulphur Queen had a history of fires and debris was found west of the tip of Florida. Cuban fishermen reported an unusual smell. I remember the news bulletin when the Marine Sulphur Queen was reported missing in my mid-teens. After I completed my research and the song was written and recorded, I contacted the owner of the best site online about the Marine Sulphur Queen. She was the daughter of one of the crewmen who perished on the ship. I emailed her a copy. I wanted her approval before posting the video. She approved and we made plans for her to come to Galveston and pick up her CD. She lived in New Orleans. She passed away a short time after we talked. A friend of hers contacted me and told me she had died.

Standing At The Gates Of Hell - I wrote this last weekend and couldn't find a video feed that added to the lyric. I finally used the frantic action of the video I found on YouTube, so I could post it and get the limited YouTube copyright. There is no copyright on the video. Trying to help someone you love when they are in denial is a thankless task. They chose to dance with the devil. Now, indeed, they stand at the Gates of Hell.

Husbands And Wives [Master] - The wedding night revelry and enough love and lovin' to remember for a lifetime! I went on 4 honeymoons. Two to the same hotel in Destin, Florida. A class act, I am. I was a manager at a Nashville hotel by Opryland and got a discount at the Destin hotel. As I recall, the 1st honeymoon was at the Flagship in Galveston and it was on an upper floor with a balcony. When you're young you can be acrobatic. When you get older, you're more likely to be acrophobic. Is the beautiful lady in the video alone because love went wrong, or waiting for her husband to join her at the beach?

I was honored that Operation Helmet included my acoustic song as the last song on a CD sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. I donated the song for the CD release. The CD was also sold to raise money to pay for helmet kits for front-line troops. The video in sections has a scene from Jarhead, action on Guadalcanal from WW2 (My father was on Guadalcanal and received a Presidential Citation for his actions defending their position when they ran out of ammo, They were armed with bayonet and bare hands), and a tank poised to strike. When I played the song live, I gave a CD to any vet in attendance. All the videos used were posted on YouTube. This video is not for sale and all rights remain with the owners.

Wave Dance {Master} - A summer morning I hatched a plan to walk to the beach with my guitar and a legal pad and write old-style all morning. I had been staying with a friend for several weeks waiting for my new apartment to be available. I had no idea what I would write but fate supplied me with that. At the end of the sand road where the Gulf of Mexico was intent on taking inch by inch of the land as its own, I sat down on a stump and looked to my left and over to my right and saw condemned signs tacked up on abandoned beach houses. I had my idea of what I wanted to write. Coastal Texans gradually lose their beachfront to the relentless tides, to be condemned by the State Of Texas. I finished Wave Dance in 30-40 minutes and hurried back to my computer to record it. So much, for writing all morning.

Last Old Man Of The Sea [Master] - In 1984, I took the long way back to Nashville from Beaumont, Texas. I followed I-10 east to the Atlantic Ocean then turned right and spent 5 days in Key West (Had meant to stay one). I blew the engine in my car and slept on the beach for 3 nights while it was repaired. I came up the west coast of Florida after cutting across on Alligator Alley. While in Key West, I visited Ernest Hemingway's house. That night I started my trip back and had to stop and buy an extra battery due to my alternator dying a quick death. Alternating the two batteries and stopping to get charges, I made it to Franklin, Tennessee right as the sun was falling from the sky. Fast forward 16 years to Galveston and I was sitting on the steps of the Seawall, my favorite place to write and I thought about the Hemingway house and his typewriter. I wrote Last Old Man Of The Sea in tribute to Hemingway and in memory of "One-Eyed Jack" Hans. When he died he asked for a wake and for me to play his favorite JD songs. He knew them all. As his time to go approached I had given him private concerts in his room and we would make plans about what we would do when he got better, even though we both knew that wouldn't happen. He had lost an eye to cancer in his first battle. I'll always love this song for many reasons. Jack had me as his guest on the Krewe Babalu float in the Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday Parade. I later sang on the Krewe Palapa Float 6 times and enjoyed throwing beads and dodging a few. Good times.

Ballad Of A Lost Soul - An original based on my alcoholic grandfather who began drinking heavily when my grandmother died and took his retirement and ran through the lump sum payment in no time. When I was a kid my father would go pick him up and bring him to the house. He always smelled. I later learned it was whiskey. His sons all joined the military. My Uncle Jack the Navy and my father and Uncle Leroy the USMC. Uncle Leroy lost the use of a leg on Iwo Jima. He later committed suicide in a Ft Worth hotel. He was in constant pain. My father received a Presidential Citation for bravery on Guadalcanal for his battlefield actions when his unit ran out of ammunition and wave after wave of the enemy attacked. Armed with his bayonet and his bare hands, he defended their position. My father had nightmares all his life about choking the life out of his enemy. My mom would leave the bedroom when he was dreaming he was in battle. Several times he rammed his fist through the sheetrock wall violently. He lied about his age and joined the Marines at 15 in early 1940.

The video of dancers in Breaux Bridge, LA shows the Cajun spirit and would you look at the footwork of the lady in boots. Beachcomber's Tale [MASTER EDIT] - A song about Galveston and life here. My adopted hometown since July 1st, 1998. The beautiful people here live by the Gulf of Mexico by choice. The Coastal Texans deal with the storms and rebuild as necessary. The level of kindness here is unmatched. I have written so many songs sitting on the steps of the Seawall. When a friend dropped by and got out to listen it never bothered me. I gave an impromptu acoustic concert. My wheelchair has thwarted that for now. A goal.......Live recording with no punch-ins, no reverb, no EQ changes.

Love - An original inspired by my friend's videos. I spent the day yesterday looking for a video of a woman in white looking out the bedroom window at the moon and seeing the trees dance before her eyes. Finding one with the couple in the song portrayed was not going to open without hiring actors or drafting friends. The jazzy feel was playful.

Gulf Of Mexico (MASTER EDIT) - Written on the steps of the Seawall in Galveston and performed at least 4,000 times by 2008. I wanted the guitar riff to harmonize with the waves as my percussion. The hint of a seagull in the intro was deliberate. For 19 years "Gulf Of Mexico" was the mood changer I played to elevate my spirit. To me, the serenity of it and the blending of how much I love being in Galveston among my friends, my religious beliefs, and how blessed I feel when I wake up each morning. Now I have two friends with the voices of angels. I would rather hear them, and my best friend Dennis, who is the most versatile Rock-n-Roller I've had the pleasure of hearing. "I wash my troubles away in the Gulf of Mexico. Let the warm water take away my sins. The beach is my church, I know. When my heart feels so cold., I wash my troubles away in the Gulf of Mexico. "

God Bless Texas [COVER] - Cover of the country Texas anthem. With all the bad press Texas has been getting, it needs more than a blessing and a human governor and posse.

Save Me From Myself JD Richards - This original was written at Crystal Beach on the Texas Coast in November 1980. I wrote Save Me From Myself, Driftwood, and parts of 4 other songs that cold, rainy day. I had driven down from Beaumont with the intent of fishing but I had brought my beach guitar and ended up sitting in my car with my guitar in my lap all day. Publishing Tuneupon Music ASCAP Changed to BMI in 1987.

Your Touch - I made up my mind to record this in one try because that's all I had tonight. Felt like a herd of deer ran rough unshod across my neck and back. Not a one of them looked like Bambi. An original inspired by my talented friend's videos and amazing voice.

Goodbye My Lady [Master Edit] - The 1st song I had demoed in Nashville at the Sound Lab on Grand in 1980. The song was written in C#. The producer cut the tracks in C. I am not a contralto. No one could sing the melody. 20 years later I slowed the track down and sang an alternate melody line, so I would have a studio demo. This is the original acoustic demo from 1980. A descriptive story song.

Timeless Beauty - I wanted to post this today and on my 51st try I was close enough to edit out my blown lyric in the 2nd chorus. I had watched a video on reincarnation right before the lyrics were written and repeatedly edited. My inspiration was a beautiful, intelligent woman whose picture is that of a timeless beauty. My imagination did the rest. I visualized someone holding a picture and being enchanted to such a degree that he can't put it down. The attraction was so intense that he thought, perhaps, in another life they had been together. Love through time!
