What was the first concert you ever went to?
Parents took me to see Duke Ellington in 1970, I think.
What gear do you use?
I am a singer. My voice part is tenor.There are many great arias and songs for tenor voice, but my favorite piece of music is the Bach B Minor Mass.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Billie Holiday. Her ability to penetrate to the rawest emotion with the most devastated means really gripped me. It still grips me.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I have never played in a band,but I have sung in many choirs, doing Renaissance Polyphony, English Tudor Anthems, Baroque Masters, American Avant Garde, Symphonic Masterworks, etc.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Anyplace in Kansas City when Coleman Hawkins came to town with Fletcher Henderson and lost his shirt to Lester Young and Ben Webster and Herschel Evans. Minton's Playhouse 1940-45 Wherever Trane was playing Studying the french chansons of Debussy with the composer would be amazing!
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
In some choirs, as many as 3000. As a soloist, 300 or 400.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
The Far East Suite by Duke Ellington. The Far East Suite represents the Ellington Orchestra at its late career summit of expressiveness. It's lush, humorous, sensual. A Must Hear!
