I started playing piano at the age of 7. I wrote my first musical composition at the age of 11. I realized I wanted to be a composer at 11, even though I didn't know what that meant. I began studying piano at the Settlement School of Music and have studied piano ever since. I have learned a lot about composition by playing great pieces in the piano literature. Being a vocal major at CAPA also formed a large part of formative musical experiences.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
One of the most powerful musical experiences I had was at the age of 12. I was invited to sing in the Royal School of Church Music Choir School in Princeton, NJ. The whole experience was amazing, but at the of the week we traveled to New York City. The adult choir sang the Stravinsky Mass. My whole musical perspective shifted. I loved every note of what I heard. I was captivated.
What gear do you use?
I am a pianist through and through. I prefer an acoustic instrument. I started turning gigs down that didn't have an acoustic instrument about 10 years ago. I play Roland at church in addition to an acoustic piano and the pipe organ, but my preference is always toward the acoustic. That is not to say I shun playing keyboards. In fact, I used to own a Korg M1 that got me through many a Latin gig back in the 1990's.
