I've been playing guitar live for almost 35 years. I started playing guitar, drums, bass, and piano around age 11 because I loved music and wanted to write and record songs.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
My first concert was Trooper (with Zon opening) at the Kentville Centennial Arena in 1977 (I think). I was ten. I went with my mom. She stayed in the bleachers with cotton in her ears while I slinked my way to front and center. It was loud, powerful, mind-altering, joyous, and inspirational.
What gear do you use?
I've been using the same gear for the past 20 years. I almost exclusively play Lado Falcons which are excellent Canadian guitars handmade in British Columbia. I sometimes play an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. My favorite piece of gear is my Gallien-Krueger Backline 100 amplifier that I used for every show and recording since 1995.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
I wanted to be a musician the moment I heard a KISS record. Some of my biggest influences are Rush, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd. Friends usually turned me on to those groups.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I've played in bands since age 11. My teen year bands include ADAM STRANGE, AWOL, and J.F. COOK'N'. I formed ETCETERA (when I moved to the city in 1988) which lasted 12 years. From 2000 to present, I've played guitar in the Halifax Alice Cooper tribute band MY OTHER BROTHER ALICE, I currently play in a power rock trio called OZONE which formed in 2008. Everything I've played in band, wrote, and/or recording was always in a rock context - Classic rock, hard rock, metal, or progressive rock.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
I could make a long list, but I'd love to jam with the original Alice Cooper band.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
550 people is the biggest audience I played to all in one room. Thankfully I got to do that many times with ETCETERA (1988-2000) and sometimes four nights in a row. Honestly, the smallest audience would be zero.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
KISS: THE ORIGINALS [which is a set of KISS's first three albums] because those tunes inspired me to become a musician in the first place when I heard them in 1975. Those songs still hold up for me now matter how many times I've heard them.
