How long have you been playing?
____ many years (lot of years)
I started playing bass guitar on accident... Yeah lol I accidentally a bassist rite?
I was hanging out with a girl, who had a band in her barn... no srsly they practiced in her pole barn. The bassist was dating a teenage drama queen and was a no show more often then not. The guitar player John Bryson Greene (Bryce as we all knew him until he passed away and we attended his service) picked up a cheap Ibanez Fender copy (in the late 80's Ibanez made junk) and had me play using the guy's rig... Bryce showed me what he thought the bass to some songs was... and off we went. We played a few shows at teen friendly clubs in the area, one of which at last check is still in business (Somewhere Else Tavern in Greensboro NC) and we played oour high school talent show... which was a debacle. I got away with being very undisciplined because Bryce didn't care what I played when we played covers, as long as it was somewhere in key and in time...
After Bryce died that band broke up I floated in and out of people's garages and basements, finding out that playing incorrectly was not always appreciated... I tried my hand again at guitar but bassists were in such demand, more often then not those were the ads I answered.
I landed a gig, with a very strange mix of misfit musicians playing 50-50 mix of originals and covers. We managed a mini tour and several high profile gigs, even though quite honestly we sucked. Our covers were mangled our originals lacked substance and structure.
I again found myself between bands, trying to forge my own group of misfit musicians... I found the misfits alright...
I was considering selling my gear when I got a call to play in a band that had been formed by a singer I admired before she moved on... We ended up with a revolving cast of guitar players (including myself for a minute) drank a load of beer and had a great time for nearly a decade...
Financial circumstances (read Bush crashed the economy) forced me to move to the black hole of music in South Carolina.

What was the first concert you ever went to?
I saw Kiss with opening act Ted Nugent in Grensboro NC
I went with a couple of friends from school, we sat in the parking lot drinking Mad Dog 20/20 so most of the show is lost to memory.

What gear do you use?
I have an LTD by ESP f-204 an Ibanez Sound Gear fretless and a reassembled five string made from Ibanez Hamer and various parts. I Hartke stack with a 4 x 10 and 1 x 15 Cabinet
I also own a Jackson King V guitar, floyd rose and EMG p/us an Ibanez Iceman a Randall protubes guitar head and a fender 4 x 12 plus various f/x and a few pieces of cheap PA gear.

new band mates
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Influences?
For years I listened to players like Rudy Sarzo with their simplistic 8 note groove and thought if it was good enough for them... having seen Quiet Riot live and seeing how Sarzo is actually a monster player, changed my attitude.
I began trying to emulate different different aspects of different players. I started playing in the pocket for the first half of a riff and busting out at the end ala Sting.
I started adding rests for effect ala Gene Simmons.
I experimented with different rhythms for playing a single note pedal like Cliff Burton.
For a time when I was practicing daily and gigging twice a week I had incorporated two hand tapping into several songs (need it or not)
From a writing perspective, I like the A-B-A-C style riffs of Metallica, and the dropped tuned aggressiveness of bands like Disturbed and Godsmack. I'm trying to get more into single single note metal riffing like Megadeth even though I have lost all motivation to practice and write these days.

Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?

If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Henry Juarez and Eric Rudy, from my last band, we had good times together and I miss those two guys.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
Biggest? a couple thousand at Pelican Stadium at Myrtle Beach during Bike week... not surprisingly our heavy metal did not go well with the Southern rock fans there to see 38 Special and SRA - they hated us.
Smallest? Like all bands, I have played for our girlfriends and the bar tender...

You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
It would be a tie...
Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction. I first heard the album after seeing them live touring with Motley Crue. To this day it has no song that I would hit the skip button on.
Metallica ...And Justice For All At the time it came out I found it relevant to world events at the time. Shortly after the big crash of '08 and subsequent occupy protests I blew the dust off the disc and discovered not only do the lyrics still hold up today, but the music is an example of what four of the most bad ass musicians in the world in their prime can accomplish.

This is such a lyrically sarcastic song it almost makes up for the lack of musicianship, wait I said "almost" lol

Admitted;y this song got on my nerves nearly as much as the guitar player who wrote it. It was like, "hey Randy that is a neat riff but shouldn't we not over abuse it?"
Playing this song was a trade off for getting him to play out older originals... Randy Craven, piece of work that one...
It wasn't until months later I paid attention to the lyrics and was like "srsly? WTF? this is in pedocreep territory"

Yes the song is called "rape" and yes it is about just that... It was always planned to get a female singer to sing the second half of the song which is about the victim getting revenge... but like all our plans... we spoke them into our budweiser bottles and that's where they lived and died.... such is life, it;s still a fun little riff...
This was another Henry Juarez song rewritten by Chris Nelson
Yes I played an E pedal thru the entire second half of the song... it's not say I was apathetic to his epic rewriting, I just didn't like it enough to figure out what he was doing so I took the easy road...

Chris replaced Henry Juarez after we had creative differences.
All I can say about playing with Chris was ... interesting.
We were all at a strip club, we all had boobs in our face and I hear my name being called. I look over, he is trying to talk around a girl giving him a lap dance to ask me if I thought he should use fourths or sevenths dyuring a song we'd just written... inorite... I went back to looking at boobs... like a boss

Simple three chord song, goofy intro that let the drummer warm up... many a night in the clubs began with this song.... they ended, well I'm not sure how they ended but I always woke up the next morning...

I am possibly the last of my former bandmates with a copy of this song and my cd has a scratch... you'll hear it... IDC I do this for teh lulz only

This song is silly and was a simplistic self serving tune... Note to all... do not play music like this in front of old bikers who are only tolerating your being there because they showed up early to see Southern Rock legends...

This is a song for anyone who has ever been picked on, put down, made to feel inferior in anyway for not conforming to what society thinks is appropriate. If you had one chance to show them all why you are better then them, would you do it? Or choke?

Experiment: replace current guitarist with a new guy... stay out til 4 am drinking at strip clubs, go to band room hung over and half drunk, record whatever you write.....
Suddenly lulz....

from the same sober sessions.... only a very mellow and sedate tune, and for the record, *I* wasn't the one who had to fix screw ups on this one... lol... I grew to loath the singer, and the rhythm guitarist. We had a revolving door of lead players, like Spinal Tap and their drummers...

four drunks paid twenty five dollars each to a fifth drunk and the result is suddenly muddy....
I at this point in time was in a band with a guitarist I desipised... he was very non talented, and extremely loud mouthed and hot headed... I did however want to bang his wife... this song was simple but fun to play live... I would dial up a brittle bass tone add flange and play with a wha... that idea didn't occur to me until after we recorded it and it sounded like mud.... The band fell apart shortly after I not only said "I can play guitar better then you" I bought one and proved it....

Second time in the same back woods studio... second time sober, second time scared... I had a series of really cool bass runs for this song... I white knuckled the neck so hard afraid of screwing up that I screwed up... heard the expression fix it in the mix? How about sitting on the counter next to the mixer paying for the time to fix your tracks out of your own pocket because the band ran out of money recording lead guitar parts?
So while everyone else made faces, drank beer and threw stuff at me I hurried through this so we could go to the strip bar... long live rock n roll

Very first time to a recording studio... I was young dumb and scared shitless... I turned around to my amp and suddenly remembered we had agreed no drinking that day.... Of the ten to twelve different fills I had ready that I played throughout the song I could only remember one when the drummer counted us in...
Lesson learned - beer and music go hand in hand.
I enjoyed my time in this band (for a time) regional tour was a life style I enjoyed then... The singer Jeff Neal was a tremendous talent that was squandered in N Nowhere NC
