How long have you been playing?
Been playing guitar since I was 15 years old, about 25 years. Been playing saxophone since I was a child. I find it extremely compelling and impossible to put down, even though it is sometimes maddening and impossibly difficult.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
First concert was a little band called U2 playing at a church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was a long time ago in a city far, far away, and it was awesome. I went with my best friend at the time, who would eventually succumb to schizophrenia. We both loved it and talked about starting a band for years afterword. I truly wish he could see me now \m/
What gear do you use?
holy shit if this question is not about Operation Rango: Gravity my attention span is extremely limited. a Fender, and a Les Paul Custom, but my favorite axe is my girl, my Cordoba.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Alan Parson's project, because they are amazing. My brother exposed me to them, the dude behind Dark Side of the Moon, and the rest of my life was tragic.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I'm presently a solo artist, and my first album Etherati was 100% solo effort. I perform the vast majority of my recordings myself, although I did have help from Stuart Epps and his crew for my latest single Smokehouse. Previously played in a Seattle hard rock outfit called Zombie Jihad and a Texas blues band with a collection of unspeakable symbols for a name.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
my dad and his brothers in the mountains of West Virginia because that is the ultimate jam-space and those are the people with the mightiest axes.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
i've danced on stage at Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the Wortham Center in Houston. i've performed in front of thousands of people, and in front of one. its always entertaining for both of us and full of mistakes but nobody seems to mind because it's just ridiculous fun.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
alan parson's project turn of a friendly card. it's all about taking long shots to take your life in a new direction, like getting off an island or becoming a rock star.

Etherati Track #1: The Mistress<br/>
=========================<br/>
It's time to see the mistreess
Get down on your knees
You don't want to miss this
Can't do what you please
When you see the mistress
Tell her what you need
She won't be the witness
She might let you bleed
The mistress is calling
I can't resist
It's time to please mistress
She will only tease
Nevermind your business
Bind you up and leave
Pray before the mistress
Pray for what you need
Don't expect forgiveness
For all your wicked deeds
The mistress is calling
I can't resist
Never fear the mistress
Leave behind your sleaze
She won't mind your distress
She'll put you at ease
When you leave the mistress
When you feel appeased
You may have an interest
In mistress as you please
The mistress is calling
I can't resist

Season III Episode 2: It's a non-stop descent into extremely danceable madness as Rango resolves last week's cliffhanger and Plagus continues to wrestle for control of the show. Featuring the irresistable electronic grooves of Jenni French and MikeWhitePresents and the sticky hooks of Carlos Wilde offset by the gritty guts & glory of guitar man Rick Frost and a repeat double play from Dai Sharkey. From out of the fog the spotlight shines on Steve Gardner and his project The Condition, and along the way to this face-melting rock triple we get some relief from around the world including Anchorage, Alaska, incoming fireball Civilized Tears, the sublime Six String Woody, the lovely Hetty Lane and resident aussie genius Mark Robinson. And it wouldn't be a show without Simon James White, Patrick Kindy, Tim Hearn and two from Savage Henry, so rack'em and stack'em, baby \m/

=====================
when i leave you in September
i’ll ask that you remember
the times we shared
you thought would never come
i wrote you in a letter
you asked me to forget her
showed me how you love
that’s how it’s done
when i close my eyes i can see your smile again
like yesterday i still remember when
you danced upon the window sill that day
enamel eyes have never looked that way
if you take my hand by the silver moon
i’ll tell you when, i promise soon
we’ll walk until the afternoon
we’ll find a way and make some room
you’re going to need some space you see
to fly away with me

<3 <3 <3 so right on, baby \m/
You're lonely
With his company
Wishing
You could come to me
This won't be easy I see
It's not between you and me
Only
If it's warm and free
Living
What this means to me
It's not the way things should be
Not between you and me
Something's going to change tonight
Never be the same
Blinded by the softest light
Nobody to blame
Catch me if I'm falling down
Tell me I'm okay
Words can find their way around
Tell me what to say
Falling
With another word
Broken
From the things I'd heard
This won't be easy I see
It's not between you and me
Reason
For my heart to sing
Leaving
Is the hardest thing
It's not the way things should be
Not between you and me
Something's going to change tonight
We'll never be the same
Blinded by the softest light
There's nobody to blame
Catch me if I'm falling down
Tell me I'm okay
Words can find their way around
Tell me what to say
Never
Saw the end today
Walking
Out the other way
This won't be easy I see
It's not between you and me
Crying
So your heart can roam
Leaving
For the long drive home
It's not the way things should be
Not between you and me
Something's going to change tonight
We'll never be the same
Blinded by the softest light
There's nobody to blame
Catch me if I'm falling down
Tell me I'm okay
Words can find their way around
Tell me what to say

Pop Song (Acoustic)
rango's pop song, really a blues song that's really a love song.
rango: o'rly?
mona: ya, srsly!
from the top of the emerald city...
i know your're not sleeping
and the company you're keeping
keeps you up at night
like the trains in the summer
every night i wonder
how to make it right
every song is written
every time and cue
every single breath
takes me back to you
the ryhme and the reason
the time and space
the wind in my wings
my china doll in lace
maybe i'll just write a pop song, baby
stick a hook in the chorus
you can sing along, maybe
build a bridge in the middle
that will make you want to get up and dance
for romance
i could sing about you
i could sing about love
i could sing about hummingbirds and morning doves
we could fly away
and never look back again,
'till the end
i can wonder, i can wait
i can give myself to fate,
that's alright
but the morning never comes
and i never see the sun
without your light
it's our time, take my hand
running start along the sand
when we fly then you'll see
that we were always meant to be
in a pop song
maybe i'll just write a pop song, baby
stick a hook in the chorus, you can sing along, maybe
build a bridge in the middle
that will make you want to get up and dance
for romance
i could sing about you
i could sing about love
i could sing about hummingbirds and morning doves

here's the poddie for those who missed the AudioBurger.com rollout last week. yes, it was a bit of a pile-on, and unfortunately i had to leave abruptly during the show to tend my home situation.but make no mistake, 2013 is the Year of the Dogg. with performances from Simon James White and his crew SjW, TRAFFiC EXPERiMENT, Jed McConkey and MikeWhite Presents, as well as Jackson's Warehouse and the Shanklin Freakshow. see what Johnny Burger, Jack Chandler, Sascha Cooper and Darren Baz Badrock were going on about in this 90 minute premiere that skewers both Google AdSense and the ultimate symbol of consumer disregard, the steamer from the little napolean that you're reading now: Facebook.it ain't perfect, it's very raw and indie and there's a 15 second drop-out in the middle that will leave you scratching your head. actually the whole thing will leave you scratching your head, which is why you should totally listen. consider: fleas (dog humor), pause & resume, or download & burn for your car! it's for you guys! i want to entertain you, it's very simple!!!\m/~(-.-)~\m/ - moo. moooooo! mooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

33 minutes of mountain in a bottle. more landscape than song, because mountains are huge, right? one continuous riff that rolls endlessly to the next as mountain ranges tend to do. i captured the essence of my synesthetic impressions from an oregon mountaintop in my dobro the other day. yesterday my son encouraged me to record it, and he was right, it was fun. there are rivers and streams, meadows and ravines painted in green and grey, as well as a bluebird, a touch of pink lemonade and the mountain man himself. just passing the time...

Walez - 2001 live power trio a random jam about random things among non-random friends, this is a song about:
getting the girl
wales (where jed mcconky's headed)
taking a shovel to the face in an alley
whales (as in the sea monster: big fish tails)
losing your religion in an instant
walez (as in you're wailing on that geetar, rango)
finding your religion in an instant
triple entendres, because fancy, right? :-D
also: maximizing your minimalism, and two chord jams among friends.
...circa 2001, in a storage room in Austin, live with my buddies Dan Easton and Brett Hopkins
Caught my shadow
Never should have had a
moment like that
Back in the saddle
Never shoulda rode a
Train without a track
She got away from me
As far as I can see
She got away from me
Back in the alley
Never should have made a
move like that
Been to the valley
Never to the river cause
I turned my back
She got away from me
As far as I can see
She got away from me
Back in the battle
Never really thought I'd
Take that flack
Tail might rattle
Never got to hit you
For a heart a attack
She got away from me
As far as I can see
She got away from me

with a game for a demon

Ticket for Two (A Christmas Romance)

i didn’t have money for fun
i only had money for milk & honey
and chasing that love on the run
i didn’t have time for romance
i didn’t have time for love
but i found time to make you mine
and now i’m singing heaven above
all i want is to spend my days with you
all i want is for us to see it through
every night i tell myself it’s true
since nobody else can even hold a candle to you
we’re going to need a ticket for two
something in the way you call me
something in the way you say my name
makes the winter warm and balmy
makes a guy crazy, making me insane
i knew about a dog named rango
he knew a couple cats could play
if they all got together in a stormy weather
we could get married that day
all i want is to spend my days with you

Operation Rango: Into the Snow II - This is Not Empire
January 20th, 2012 was the day several snowflakes fell and shutdown one of the most advanced technology hubs in the world, the Emerald City of Seattle. Rango went into the snow with his survival kit in search of Tacoma axe man Tim Hearn, who into into the snow in search of Rango. A cautionary tale that reveals not only the fate of the two friends, but also the last known sighting of my wallet before I lost it, along with my phone, and eventually my grip on reality.

Dobro Love: before there was dobro love (live), the song i took with me to the NBC cattle call for And the Winner Is, there was dobro love (the rehearsal, first time playing off the piano, oddly enough). interrupted continuously by the background sound of my Facebook, Skype and Twitter feeds (yup, it's that annoying, 24/7). at one point i lose it and drop an f-bomb (sorry, i am rango :-/, it was very annoying and frustrating, you must agree) (mona: or what?)(plagus: hush woman). also: smokehouse variations.
♥ ♥ ♥
A single condenser microphone captured this rehearsal of Enamel Eyes with a segue into some Smokehouse Variations, decidedly upbeat. This is much better audio than the camcorder audio on the video of the same name, and at some point I'll replace the audio on that video with this one. This only the main musical selection, none of the noodling and twittering and Skyping and cussing from the video.
Lyrics:
when i leave you in September
i’ll ask you to remember
the time we shared
we thought would never come
i told you in a letter
you asked me to forget her
showed me how you love
that’s how it’s done
when i close my eyes i can see your smile again
like yesterday i still remember when
you danced beside the window sill that day
enamel eyes have never looked that way
if you take my hand by the silver moon
i’ll tell you when, i promise soon
we’ll walk until the afternoon
we’ll find a way and make some room
you’re going to need some space you see
to fly away with me

And just turn this hummer up
I got a nice surprise, wanna step inside
Don't come back for a while
Pack your things and get some wings
And I'll turn up the dial
If another woman's walking
Out the door when you come in
Just remember what I said
On the day I let you win
You always ask for romance baby
Credit cards and wine
I just want some simple lovin
You can't find the time

Smokehouse (original demo for Stuart Epps, acoustic guitar and voice):
what are we left with
when the tide comes
when the clock runs out
and the road runs on
you might not forget this
but you might have
when you walked on me
and walked out on us
I'm going to the smokehouse
I'm going there by myself
I'm going to the smokehouse
Don't want to see nobody else
Going to the smokehouse.
By myself
Going to the smokehouse.
By myself
I just don't get this
Would you mind, love?
With the summer rains
Comes push to shove
I never mentioned
But i might have said
If it wasn't for you
I'd be better off dead
Better off dead.
I'm going to the smokehouse
I'm going there by myself
I'm going to the smokehouse
Don't want to see nobody else

remembering our soldiers today \m/
this was a live take in 2001 with Brett Hopkins on drums and Daniel Easton on bass. the song came in an inspired flash as i tried to imagine what i would tell my parents if i was a young man going off to fight:
I'm going to Afghanistan
It's there I'll make my final stand
Like Johnny Spann and everyone
Who loved him
I know you may not understand
I find myself the kind of man
To cross the line in the sand
For something
This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war
The target looks like every man
I see him in the market stand
I could take him now
If I'm not wrong
Before he gets to Pakistan
I'll track him through the mountains and
He'll give me one reason
To be strong
This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war
Winter's come, it bites my hands
Like every day I've walked these lands
I've found another reason
For a man's revenge
With every shot I've made my stand
So many men so much demand
I'll never leave, I've joined the band
Until the very end
This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war
Face to face, hand to hand
Fighting for the promised land
Every target, every man
Squeeze and go
I look at him and his demands
I know he'll never understand
I've always had the upper hand
He will not know
This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage

Tequila Haze - Don Quixote with a Cordoba and a bottle of blue agave?
Oh, tequila haze
And rainy days
What did I do?
All the plans we made
I'm still amazed
I never followed through
Let me tell you about
the state I'm in
I wanna give it up
I just can't begin
A one last time
to reminisce
Give me just a one last kiss
Clouds and sunny days
Never showed the way
What should I do?
Time it's here to stay
So many ways
I'm still wanting you
Let me tell you about
the state I'm in
I wanna give it up
I just can't begin
A one last time
to reminisce
Give me just a one last kiss
While the games we play
Just drain away
A bottle or two
Life it takes away
The day by day
Until you're due
Let me tell you about
the state I'm in
I wanna give it up
I just can't begin
A one last time
to reminisce
Give me just a one last kiss

Soundtrack from the video Operation Rango: Texas Dub / The Pope (uncut)
Rango the Dog and Whiskey Tex take on the Vatican. As you might expect, things get somewhat shreddy and kind of pope-ish. 6 minutes and change of sticky & sweet, southern style improvisation before the man with the procession starts on the chimes and the neoclassical shredding begins for another 6 minutes as his paladins storm the gate. Captured live down at the Smokehouse, with no rehearsal and no accounting for taste. Two dudes and their guitars on a wild romp through a sonic landscape packed full of dirty pentatonic goodness and gratuitous wide-interval finger tapping.

The Pope - Hat Dance (guitar solo). There are popes and there are popes. There are the kind that lead with chimes and the kind that lead with a legion of bloody paladins.
This was a version of the solo before the song was codified with Whiskey Tex in the Texas Dub / The Pope (uncut) video. There is video but Rango's too busy to produce it at the moment, as well as a take I like to call "Detroit". l8r \m/.

Operation Rango: Texas Dub / The Pope (uncut)

Liberteria - Metal Ink (First Cut)
From composer Sabrina Pena Young, my take on Simeon, performing the solo Metal Ink from Libertaria: The Virtual Opera. This is my personal mix, raw and full of improvisation. Expect the final mix to be subject to change. Not by chance, I caught the entire escapade on video and snapped a few hundred images, because it was yet another surreal moment in My Life As a Musical.

Dobro Love (Rehearsal)
A raw camcorder capture from rehearsals the Etherati Command & Control Complex at Lynnwood Station. The muse? The Princess Bride and my beautiful daughter Claire, home after a year Away From Me. The enemy? Twitter/Facebook/Skype. Paradoxically, they are also my most valued technical assets. What to do? Mess up, Rango style, with an F-Bomb. Try again. Lather/Rinse/Repeat.

Operation Rango: Risk (Live Guitar Solo):
This is a live capture of a reference take of Risk. It's 100% solo guitar, originally rejected because it was inadvertently recorded on a randomly hanging microphone instead of direct from the amp. I ultimately changed my mind because the ambient sounds of my feet tapping and shuffling on the floor add to the live feeling of it. Produced for Into the Snow III, where rango loses a headcutting duel to the shredder from LA (the first take). little dancing, some psychedelia, and the second take is after the credits so make this face :-D and this one \m/ and this one :-o and then this one again :-D.

Matthew Meadows sings the lead villain Simeon on Sabrina Pena Young's science fiction opera Liberteria. The demo reel contains two takes of the same scene, one pleading and the other gentle, to a baby doll facing post-apocalyptic socialist USA.

The soundtrack for Check 1,2 and Into the Snow comes from a demo of my song The Ringmaster. The Ringmaster was originally conceived as the opening from a concept album and stage show, but plans have changed and now it's the finale on my forthcoming 2012 album Temple of Zither. It features a cast of characters that includes the Ringmaster, Daddy, an acrobat who takes a fatal fall, and his Little Boy. Angel is on the lighting tree, not to be trusted. The clowns Dimitri and Alexander are fighting for the spotlight bumbling around with their kazoos while little Nicolai, a violin virtuoso, times his scales to the arcs of the acrobats overhead and the sway of the purple elephant's trunks while circling them on his unicycle. This is currently a demo, and producer Stuart Epps (Led Zeppelin / Elton John / Matthew Meadows) is taking over from here. This song is inspired by a real event I witnessed at a circus 25 years ago. Cue the lights, bring up the scrim, and spotlight stage right on the man in the hat.

a song i wrote about seeing my dad in heaven, as a little boy, from a memory i had on the shores of lake michigan:
In the summer
When the days grow long
I find
I miss you
I wonder
When I wander
Will I find you
On the shores of a Michigan dune
If heaven
Heaven help me
The tides
Are listening
Forever
Maybe longer
In my mind
I'll kiss you

Operation Rango: Into the Snow
It's been months since Seattle's tragic Snowpocalypse and now the truth's come out: it was nothing but a media fraud. Or was it? No matter, Rango's got more important things to tend to: his buddy Tim Hearn.
It's a widely known fact that I'm bipolar and of course art imitates life so my alter-ego Rango is, too. Whereas I'm gently touched and slightly medicated he is completely unbridled and hellbent on getting his 15 minutes.
This week I released my first short film starring Rango, a programmer/metal guitarist/ballet dancer with an evil robot and an empathetic rabbit. Operation Rango: Into the Snow is based on real footage captured during Seattle's tragic Snowpocalypse back in January at the cusp of a manic episode that I'm still shaking off. It's 8 minutes long, a dark comedy that blends the lines of my life with those in the narrative and some of the real musicians I've become friends with on Facebook (ed: as opposed to the imaginary ones ??).
I wrote and performed all of the music minus a few barres in the final credits, and I came up with the narrative on the fly. It took me 45 minutes in the snow and 24 hours continuous editing to create the original cut, and 4 months to frost the cake. Check it out if you can, I put a lot into it and I don't get any compensation from Youtube (banned for life by Google AdWords), it's truly out there just for you to enjoy.

Sultry LA pop artist Jenni French wrote this sexy little song and I dirtied it up with my Les Paul. This was the first and only take, one continuous shot as I improvise under hideous lighting obviously badly in need of a shower. Behind me - coffee refuse, my bass, and the corner where Rango runs the command console.
