How long have you been playing?
I was twelve when I began taking piano lessons. That would make a total of forty-three years of playing. My father played a lot of music in the house when I was a youngster. His favorites were nineteenth and twentieth century classical, cool jazz -- Miles Davis and Modern Jazz Quartet and an eclectic variety of other things: Stan Getz, Stan Kenton, Spike Jones. When I was thirteen, my elderly great aunt Nancy sent me a record for my birthday. It was Return To Forever's "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy." This completely blew my mind and launched me squarely into wanting to be a musician.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
That would have to be Sonny and Cher at the Circle Star Theatre (now gone) in Belmont, CA. Soon after, I saw Chuck Mangione at the old Concord Pavilion. It was a night-concert, outdoors. He performed "The Land of Make Believe." Amazing.
What gear do you use?
I have a lot of equipment, accumulated over the years. For performing, these days, I prefer to use my Yamaha P-60 and a Korg Triton. I have two JBL EON (G2) speakers. Simple and relatively quick to setup. I also own an OB-8 with which I can't seem to part, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Alesis D4, Peavey Spectrum bass, Yamaha TX81Z, Roland U-20 and U-220, Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000 and a Prophet 2002, Boss Dr. Rhythm, a few other pieces and processors.
What are you looking for from Fandalism?
I come here for three reasons. The first is to share my music with others and invite comments from other musicians. Criticism or praise, I am equally eager for both. The second reason, is I hope to connect with other musicians; to share thoughts, ideas and even possibly to collaborate. The third reason I like Fandalism is I like to come and listen to fresh music. It is amazing how good so many of the musicians are here on this site. It is very inspiring.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Return To Forever -- Chick Corea. I also collected every Bill Evans record I could get my hands on. I never thought I had a hope of ever understanding what he was doing though, until a few years ago. Now there's hope...at least there's hope.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I am not currently in a band. But I have been in some good ones. Funk Machine, Bay Approach, Rushmore, Backroads, Steamer, Baby Grand, Fireworks and Peter and the Wolf. The last group I was in (not counting sideman work) was The RGS Ensemble, an amazing big band made up of a combination of pros and students. The group was founded and conducted by the great Rex Bell.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Without a doubt, Jaco Pastorius!
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
I've performed numerous times for crowds of three to five thousand people. I've also performed live a couple of times on the radio. My most memorable performance would probably be with a relatively small audience. Less than 100.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Steps Ahead "Live In Tokyo." I first heard it after racing to obtain a copy because my friend Louis Aissen got me a cassette of "Magnetic" by Steps Ahead. I like that album because no matter how many times I listen to it, I will always here something I hadn't heard before.

THERE'S NO STOPPING YOU TONIGHT, ZIRRIDIA
V1
“Vallivoz,” I remember was the name
Of that place you made up in your mind,
So the memories that you left behind
Would have a place to try to live without
And have you figured out now what it’s all about?
Just take the pebble out of your shoe
Before you start to head the place you think you’re going to
You always liked to make up words
You had one for the herds that still pursue you
And though I asked, you wouldn’t tell me
What you called the places I would take you to
V2
Oh Zirridia, can’t you give it just a chance
And later on if should I hold ya’
And the careless Terpsichordia
Melts the traces from the frozen faces
Of all the people watching
As you navigate uncharted spaces
In their lonely minds as they adore you.
V3
Okay, so go on, free yourself
But lock the child away from playland
That’s not the only way to keep the upper hand
While turning beads of pearls back into sand
You looked surprised to find
you held the last strand in your hand
B1
Don’t forget Zirridia, there is a place you might like better
I can’t watch you take a header for a laugh or two again
Never thought they’d take a roll call, as you snuck back to your quarters
And you tried to bribe the porters, with the empty promises they crave
Throw it down Zirridia
Paint the town Zirridia
Paint it smooth as glass
But be careful while you’re sprinkling gas around you
You’ll dance a while there by the firelight
Until the sirens fill the the night
The old school ground
Your stomping ground
The old playground
Chorus
And when you try to find the missing teeth
You know were left there by the child
Are you really feeling wild tonight Zirridia?
Don’t forget, to close the drape
This time, on the fire escape
There’s no stopping you tonight Zirridia.
V4
On Catalina Island,
where your friends all think you went to raise your flag
You’d smile at me and sip your wine,
And pour another potion from your magic bag
While all the while, you lead the conga line
All through the summer, marching to your frozen drummer
And was it all that you expected?
You think I care that you neglected me?
Well, we only see the things we want to see
And all you brought back was Cassandra
Your tragic little yellow dead canary
B2
Take a flashlight when you go tonight
There is no moon to give you second sight
Are you really feeling wild tonight Zirridia?
Don’t forget, to close the drape
This time, on the fire escape
There’s no stopping you tonight Zirridia.
Chorus
Don’t forget Zirridia, there is a place you might like better
I can’t watch you take a header for a laugh or two again
Never thought they’d take a roll call, as you snuck back to your quarters
And you tried to bribe the porters, with the empty promises they crave
Throw it down Zirridia
Paint the town Zirridia
Paint it smooth as glass
But be careful while you’re sprinkling gas around you
You’ll dance a while there by the firelight
Until the sirens fill the the dark night
Until it’s gone; the old school ground
Your stomping ground
The old playground
Chorus
You’ll cock your head and listen to the drum
It matches with the tune you hum
Don’t forget, to close the drape
This time, on the fire escape
There’s no stopping you tonight Zirridia.
There’s no stopping you tonight Zirridia
There’s no stopping you tonight Zirridia
Not tonight, or any other night Zirridia

I JUST CAN'T BEAR THE THOUGHT
I keep myself distracted. I’m the sort of guy with lots to do.
It really isn’t hard to keep my mind away from thougts of you
But there’s something in the way you laugh
And how you smile in this photograph
I just can’t bear the thought of you
I think of you and I’m so blue
I just can’t bear the thought of you,
With him.
That day we planned a picnic in the park, how could we know that it would rain?
And how we huddled in that old farm shed, to toast the weather with champagne
When my mind goes there, I mustn’t let it
Must find some way now, darling, to forget it
That memory is the reason why
I drink champagne and start to sigh
But I know, I’ll find someone new
It’s the only thing that I can do
I just can’t bear the thought of you,
With him.
Darling when I met you,
You were finally getting over
Your feelings for this thoughtless man that you once loved
You hoped that I’d show understanding,
and help you heal without demanding
I listened and I tried resisting,
but my heart kept on insisting
And that first time I held you close to me
There was no way that I could see
Anyway that I could be
In love with any other girl
Though I might search this whole wide world
Somehow you can’t remember, the way he hurt you last December
And as I kick at our love’s embers, I almost wish we’d never met
But I’ll go on, and I’ll forget you
I’ll learn to love somebody else new
I’ll persuade my heart that we are through
‘Cause I can’t bear the thought of you
It’s something that I musn’t do
I just can’t bear the thought of you,
With him.
It’s one thing that I know is true
Forgetting is all I have to do
I just can’t bear the thought of you,
With him.

V1
I’ve had a lot of time to think about the days when everything was alright
I got everything I wanted, never even had to put up a fight
I don’t remember when things started to change
But somewhere along the way
All the plans that I thought about, stopped coming through and working out
And I saw things getting worse every day
But I’m starting now to figure it out
And where I started going wrong
I forgot to listen to the little part in me that always knew
What I need to do to play my part in the master plan
V2
There is a village in a country with a name you’ve never heard of before
A little girl was born there yesterday, surrounded by a terrible war
While she’s growing up the things she will see
No child should see that kind of violence and tragedy
But while she’s coping with how to survive, and learning how to stay alive
She’ll be growing into what she will be
And when she grows up and the time is right
Her words will put an end to the fight
She’ll hear the voice within her say
The things she has to do to play her part in the master plan
BRIDGE
Life can be so confusing. Can make you think you’ve won when your losing
It’s hard to tell what’s right from wrong
I’m not saying I have the answers
No one else knows what you should do
I guess what I’m trying to say, when you feel like you’re losing your way
Don’t look outside for the truth
Go be alone and you will hear it
The quiet little voice, the soft still quiet inner voice
Just listen and you’ll hear it say, the part that you are here to play
Your part in the master plan
V3
I had two dogs and a big house way out in suburban USA
And yes I must confess the IRS was only part of what was blowin’ my life away
All the rest would be merely a boor
Let’s just say I don’t have to go out to buy dog food anymore
At the time I thought that I was losing parts of myself
But now I see that those things were only attachments
I was ignoring what I already knew
And trying hard to fit into
Another plan I thought I had but now I’m ready to play my part
To do the work I need to start, my part in the master plan

LET ME RUB MYSELF AGAINST YA
It’s so funny how we met,
I know we won’t forget
How we played tug o’ war
in that game store
with their last croquet set
Don’t believe their slurs against my reputation
But those clothes are cutting off my circulation
Take something off, it’s getting warm in here
I’ll fix us some martinis, dear.
It’s such a quiet night tonight
C’mon, let’s hold each other tight
I believe that heaven sent ya
Gonna rub myself against ya
Gonna find a way to make you say the whole night was okay
We’ll go out tonight and have spaghetti
I’ll make you laugh until you’re ready
To meet me where you felt the lightening
When I get loose, you’ll do the tightening
Gosh you laugh so easily
When you're listening to me
I like to see the sparks come glittering from your eyes
Does it make you nervous with my fingers on your thighs?
I'll just sit tight, and wait 'til you advise
