Another Laura & Josh original (this time played solo by me) from a recent gig
Uploaded 1 year ago
How long have you been playing?
I've been singing forever. I started playing the violin as a child, and picked up viola, guitar, uke, tenor guitar, and assorted other things as an adult.
What gear do you use?
My acoustic tenor guitar and my tenor resonator guitar are both made by Gold Tone, and I love them. My electric tenor (Warren Ellis Signature Tenor) and electric 6-string (Eastwood Classic 6) are both made by the awesome Eastwood Guitars. I have a couple of relatively low-end 6-string acoustics, a sweet campfire beater of an Epiphone (DR-100) and a second-hand Washburn electric-acoustic that's my current go-to guitar. My electric bass is a Hofner Icon violin bass, and I love it to death -- makes me wish I had more time to practice playing the bass! I'm still playing this weirdo early 1980s Roth by Scherl & Roth student violin that I've had since I was a teenager, and it sounds better than it has any right to, honestly.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I'm a regular member of the Lake Avenue Jam Band -- we host a jam at the Lake Avenue Lounge, but we don't play out much anymore. My active project now is Laura & Josh, a singer/songwriter act I share with a friend of mine. I'm also a Bluestem Player behind Andy Juhl (vox and fiddle), and I back up other musicians sometimes as well (I've been a Wimp with Teddy and the Wimps, a Dreamer with Bridget and the Dreamers, and among the friends with Jimmy Davis and Friends). I've recently started performing occasionally as a solo act, but that's pretty rare for me.

Turning a fairy tale on its head with a new tune (just finished today!) -- vocals, acoustic guitar, electric bass, tenor ukulele in the break, and a snazzy, jazzy 12/8 drum loop (via Garage Band).

My brother recently gave me a dulcimer (he decided I needed another instrument). I obliged him by pretending I could play it, and this is the song that came out. The percussion is actually me beating on the back of the dulcimer.

I was experimenting with drones and drum loops last year and decided it might be fun to try The Sound of Silence. The result is...well, it's creepy, I guess. If I had it to do all over again, I'd bring the big percussion in earlier, throw some more instruments (electric guitar, bass) over the electric violin drone, and make it a lot BIGGER.

A demo version of a little song I wrote about one of my favorite movies about a child sociopath. :) This one's played on a steel tenor resonator guitar tuned in open G, and I ran the vocals through some funky effects. I'm still working on adding bass and looking for percussion and some BIG noises to make it epic, but for now the simple mix will do.

I came up with the tune and the words while I was driving yesterday, and decided to try adding a little tenor banjo to it. Whee! My first banjo song! (I am an awful banjo picker, but it's still fun...)

Variations on Over the Hills and Far Away (instrumental cover/traditional): No Zeppelin here, I'm afraid -- This is an arrangement I did of a tune that was originally a British rifle regiment march from the 18th/19th Century. The version I followed most closely was the one the marvelous John Tams arranged for the Sharpe's Rifles films. I recorded three different violin tracks (one pizz., two arco) and a fingerpicked octave mandolin line.

A work in progress -- just wrote it! Just uke and vox now, but I'm planning on throwing some more big sounds at it later. Sorry about the plosives and extra noises -- I just had an urge to get it recorded before I forgot, and didn't clean it up much.

In honor of the late Andy Williams, I took a shot at a simple version of this Mancini/Mercer classic.

I've been trying to write a musical setting for this W. B. Yeats poem for a couple of years now, and it finally worked out this week. This is a rough take -- the arrangement (just guitar, vox, and viola) needs work. Still, it turned out more or less the way I wanted it to!

Into Temptation (cover) -- this is a Neil Finn/Crowded House tune (off Temple of Low Men) that I've always wanted to try -- so I took a shot at it. :)

This is a cover of a tune off Gillian Welch's latest. I don't have the guitar chops to keep up with what Dave Rawlings does on the original, but this turned out OK with just one guitar and two vox (I recorded the harmony part, too).

Strip the Willow set (traditional) -- still messing about with Scottish dance music. A VERY rough recording (I forgot how to play the violin a couple of times in there) -- but the music itself is still danceworthy good fun!

Dashing White Sergeant (traditional) -- I came over all trad for a recent Farm to Fork culinary tour gig, and I liked the dance tunes we learned so much that I decided to record one of them. Short, sweet, fun!

I originally wrote this to be all quiet and sweet, but it just ended up kind of country-bouncy when we played it for the benefit show.

So, I asked myself, what would happen if Joan Baez tripped a bit, read too much Nietzsche, and then went looking for a date at a church picnic?
Answer, apparently: this song that I just wrote. This is a VERY rough take, but I thought I'd throw it up here anyway.

A cover of an old Youngbloods tune (also covered by Robert Plant and Ann Wilson). An excuse to work some fiddle chops. I also played acoustic guitar and bass on this track.

This is a demo I put together for a song I usually perform with Josh. There's also an electric 6-string in the mix. The drums are a Garage Band loop. We usually play it a bit faster and a LOT bigger live, and Josh covers the harmony vox.
