Aerosmith, man! Are you kidding? I can't remember the year! LOL I went with a bunch of my best party buds. Underage, drunk and stoned, Steven Tyler, and some asshole threw a brick and hit somebody in the head.
What gear do you use?
Been through all kinds of guitars, but after all these years I've hung onto a beautiful Washburn I picked up in Dallas in 1989. I found it in a pawn shop, played it for about 10 minutes and traded my Fender Strat for it-on the spot. The guitar plays for me.
I also have an Aria bass that is basically a "stick." It has no body, but that sucker has tone for miles.
Had a set of Pearl drums, Zildjan cymbs, a gorgeous color teal and awesome sound, but found myself stuck somewhere far from home and no money to get there, so . . .$$$. Now, I have a set of Roland electronic drums in my home studio. Got some new Zildjans and switched the rubber snare out with a real one. I love 'em.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Initially, I'd have to say Pat Travers. He has a style that is still unmatched today. Too bad he never got the credit he deserved. I can thank my dad for having his albums around. Carlos Santana and Brian May were other definite influences I can thank my dad for too. But, my biggest influence has to be Stevie Ray Vaughan. I was into Stevie Ray Vaughan long before anybody else had ever heard of him. The guy was extremely intense and he literally made me need to play everytime I heard him play. Needless to say, if you're influenced by Stevie, you're influenced by Jimi Hendrix and every old blues legend you can think of.
I also have to say that later on Mike and Susan Bell turned me on to some of the most beautifully written songs I've ever heard as well!
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
Flying solo at the moment. Not playing much anymore. Been in so many bands over the past 30 years, there's no way I can even remember them all. I've played in rock bands, blues bands, funk bands, country bands, Christian bands, good bands, bad bands, rubber bands. . . wait, forget that last one. LOL
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
I'd like to play drums with my Uncle Earl on bass, my cousins Jamie and Norman on guitars, my mom on keys, and my wife playing some serious percussion. Why? It would just plain be fun!
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
LOL The smallest audience I have ever played for was the bartender! That was extremely memorable! That was back in 1985. Thank God, it was all uphill from there.
I'm not sure what the largest audience was. I can definitely say that it was thousands more than the that gig back in '85!
