I've been singing for as long as I could talk. I started piano when I was 5, cello in the 4th grade, and guitar when I was 16.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
When I was reeeeeally little my dad took my older sister and I to see Davie Bowie. I think we were at SPAC in Saratoga, NY. I remember he sang Space Oddity and my dad explained the lyrics to me. It was so sad - I cried.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
It's impossible to name just one. I listened to everything (and still do). Folk to Rap to Latin to Dance to Jazz to Electronic to Classical. I like it all (except Chines Opera).
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I play with a band about 50% of the time. We just go by my name (Flo Anito) and we play mostly my original music but we also cover Adele, Blues Traveler, Nellie Furtado, Radiohead, the Pretenders, Fiona Apple, the Cranberries, Lady Gaga... We met via our mutual friends, the Fishermen Band. My drummer, Jeff Goodwin, and my bassist, Brian Waitzman, both have played with the Fishermen. We'll be at the Mansion at Strathmore May 30, 2012 and we'll be at all sorts of festivals this Summer :)
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
I got to play the VIrgin Mobile Free Fest at Merriweather Post Pavilion and there were LOTS of people there. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is another big one. Smallest audience was back in NY in high school. I used to compete so that was just me and a judge. I dreaded it...
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
I have some really good mix CDS so that would be my first choice but if we're talking single artist albums? Counting Crows - August and Everything After... REM - green... Fiona Apple - Tidal... Regina Spektor - Fidelity... Nancy Griffith - Other Rooms, Other Voices... Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong (I forget the name of that duet cd but it sure is good...)
