Guitar: Four Pence a Day (Including lyrics and chords) The words to this song are from a poem written about 1860 by Thomas Raine, from Teesdale in the north Pennines. I first came across the song performed by Ewan McColl. Lead mining was big business here in the Isle of Man in the mid to late nineteenth century, so this song is quite apt for me to sing, especially as my own maternal great-grandfather came to the island from 'Cornwall to work at the Foxdale mines. As the song implies, the workers above ground who 'washed' and sorted the ore were not well paid and had to work long hard hours to earn enough to scrape a living. They worked such long hours that they got very little sleep and to make sure they got up in time for work the mine-owners employed 'knocker-uppers' to rap at doors and windows in the early hours of the morning. The mine workers could not afford to pay for such luxuries as an education for their children. In fact the children themselves were more than likely working on the washing floors as well.

First.. I don't want anyone to get the wrong Idea about Brother Mason. I'm a Taoist. I love my christian brothers and Muslim brother equally and I make no distinction between them. I wrote this as I watched the towers fall. I wasn't mad at Afghanistan or Pakistan or any other nation. They had little if anything to do with it. This was the country boy in Brother Mason wanting to grab a gun and remove the one man responsible. I am a peaceful man to the extreme but I will not hesitate to defend my brothers and I was moved to anger. So please forgive this musical outburst and try to enjoy its musical quality's. I was a little surprised to find that it worked. I put a quick clip on Soundcloud and folk came back and said - these make great slide guitars and then Peter Papp posted an old Teisco on slide - so I thought I'd have a go!

This is, I admit, a more countryfied cover because I am at heart a country musician. Bluegrass connoisseurs will note the lack of minor notes through out the tune. That is one of the major differences between early country and bluegrass. Bluegrass musicians where quick to catch on to the value of miner keys, notes and chords. Lean back and listen in on my cover of Bill Monroe's 'With Body And Soul'.
