I've been singing since I was five years old, but I didn't really realize that I could sing until I was about 11 years old. My friends and family kept asking me to sing for them, and then I discovered how much I love to sing! I've been doing it ever since.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
The first big concert I ever went to was the Ladies First Tour at the Nassau Colosseum in April 2004. Beyonce was the headlining the tour after the release of her first album, Tamia was the opener, followed by Missy Elliot, and Alicia Keys. I went with my very best friend, and although we had nosebleed, crick-in-the-neck seats, I had an amazing time!
What gear do you use?
I've played the clarinet, piano and guitar, but my best instrument is the one I've been carrying with me since birth. There are so many songs that I enjoy singing, I can't pick just one. If I had the range, I would probably have picked anything that Beyonce has ever sung.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
My family is from the Dominican Republic, so I grew up listening to a lot of Spanish language music. My favorite artists back then were those who could move me with their songs. As I grew up and became exposed to American music, I continued to be drawn to singers and songwriters who were able to tell stories with their music. If I could mention any off the top of my head from my childhood, I would include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Barry Manilow, and Diana Ross. As I grew up, my tastes became much more diverse. I am proud to say that I love 80s hair bands like Bon Jovi, Poison, and Motley Crue; R & B artists like (of course) Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, D'Angelo, Musiq Soulchild, John Legend, and Marsha Ambrosius; and pop artists such as Sting, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Pat Benetar, Madonna, and Cindi Lauper. Not one to overlook good music, I also enjoy classical music, jazz, electronica, house, and freestyle! :)
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I've been a solo artist, for the most part, but most recently I worked with a very small, unknown band for a few months. It was a great experience, and it allowed me to grow and really discover my sound.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
BEYONCE!. Period. She is amazing. She has an incredible instrument, and she is an extremely talented songwriter.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
I've played for one, and I've played for hundreds. My fondest memories are of the performances where I can clearly see that people are moved by the music that they hear. That's when you know that you've connected to your audience. It's an amazing feeling!
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Hands down, Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder. It is truly a masterpiece, and I would never get tired of listening to it.
