Dream and Distance - Grace Pool I'm playing slide on this track
Uploaded 1 year ago
How long have you been playing?
Born with toy guitar in my hands. Got a real one at age 6 .. took some lessons and then took some more when I was 10 .. after that there was no stopping me! I always say that musicians don't make a choice to be so .. we just are.. I don't remember being anything else.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
I think the very first concert I went to was CHICAGO at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. I was 12 years old. I also saw some famous jazz acts with my parents when I was younger. Had a very big musical element in my family .. basically, we have a lot of musicians in the family.
What gear do you use?
I have 7 guitars. two Fender Stratocastrs, 1 Martin D-15, 1 Danelectro with the push pull knobs, 1 single cutaway, semi hollow-body Cort made by Triggs himself for John Sebastian, 1 yamaha classical that I seem to have misplaced in the house.. can't tell you the model at the moment! and a pre 1900s Washburn that needs some work.. beautiful instrument! My favorite is my Stratocaster that was given to me by Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
I'd say growing up .. probably Clapton .. because he was playing great guitar and no matter what style he played, the blues was a huge part of it. He had the most influence on my playing so indirectly, I was getting a lot of Albert King, BB King and so many other greats. Later, I discovered the older blues as I was playing with the Late Great James Yank Rachell. He was the real deal .. we miss him so much. (Yank Rachell born March 16, 1909 .. died April 9, 1997)
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
Lots of bands.. most publicly successful band I was in was Grace Pool (Warner.Reprise) and I also toured and/or recorded with many others such as James Yank Rachell, Jerry Lee Lewis, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, Eric Andersen, Tom Pacheco, Leroy "Lefty" Bates (Elmore James' bassist,) John Sebastian and Jimmy Vivino with The J-Band and my favorite touring band, The Mary Stokes Blues Band of Dublin Ireland.. we were a great band and we also backed blues artists who came through Ireland such as Lowell Folsom, Carey Bell, Joe Lewis Walker, Johnny Mars, Tampa Red, and many others. I still play with my own band, Beki Brindle & The Hotheads as well as Rock Royalty with Ellen Foley & Walter Egan. Also going to be doing shows with Stewkey Antoni (Nazz) in his new band, "Stewkey's Blues Experiment!" I'm very excited to be involved in those tours! Wonderful people! XO!
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
hmm .. jam with.. hmm . I'd like to go head to head with Clapton for sure! I'd love to have Rocked out with Keith Moon .. I can play to that crazy style of drumming. Of courseI would love to have Charlie Watts or John Bonham as my drummers, too. I'd LOVE to take Martin Barre's place in Jethro Tull for a few gigs! I want Jeff Beck's rig and would love to play with Tom Toomey and The current Zombies with Jim Rodford on bass but also Chris White as well and his wife Viv on vocals! Fantasy bands! Would have loved to play some dual solos with Rory Gallagher, Duane Allman, BB King, Freddie King .. Albert King and SANTANA! I could go on, believe me!
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
I think it was The Woodstock 20 year reunion concert in Bethel in 1989 20 or 30 THOUSAND people.. that was the biggest show for sure! The smallest audience besides playing for my cats at home would be some bar that didn't promote a show a long time ago.. we played for the staff and a couple of stragglers! MOST MEMORABLE performance.. whew.. there are so many .. I remember a lot of gigs.. I think it's got to be playing at Jerry Lee Lewis' 40 years in show biz concert at the Memphis Ballroom.. I was playing with The Killer and the place was packed with legends of the music biz.. but just enjoying that with Jerry who was really awesome.. he played piano for 6 hours! The entire show! Playing with him was a KILLER experience.. he's a Rock God .. an original and truly the real f**ing deal!
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Harvest by Neil Young .. I love that album .. My cousin gave it to me when I was about 12 and I learned every song on it. I don't know what it is that I love about that album .. I think I just love everything. The emotion is so deep .. I think that's what it is.. I LOVE THAT ALBUM.
